A fantastic question appeared in my inbox this morning via the ask fitz page. If you have not submitted a question yet you really should and if you have you should really submit another. The service is free so what the shit are you waiting for? On to the question:
I’m glad there is a place I can go now that will answer all my questions. You see, I’m generous with my time and money, but I’m angry at the world. What I was wondering is, if I donate a lot of money to a charity, and they put my name up on a wall, or name a building after me, but then sometime down the road I become a serial killer, will they take down my name? And if they do, ethically should they give me my money back?
Thank you in advance for your prompt and studious answer.
Kevin
First off, this question is a shining example of a great mind at work. These are the types of things we all should be thinking about throughout our day every day. Secondly, and luckily, I have already put lots of thought into this exact same question. Unfortunately I don’t have good news for you. They will attempt to take your name down.
But, I think if you plan things correctly you might be able to thwart them. Make sure you get your name in very permanent places like the cornerstone of the building. If you are donating obscene amounts of money you may want to have several buildings built and have the actual footprint of the buildings spell out your name or initials. If they go to the trouble of knocking down the buildings just because you got a little angry and killed a few people we’ll then I would suggest it is they who are the crazy ones.
Also, keep in mind that there are some signs that will go up with your name on it regardless of your philanthropic efforts. An example is below. Please keep sending these fascinating questions…they make my day!
